When the statue has a closed mouth, it is thought to represent a peaceful and meditative state of mind. The monk is believed to be holding the pot or bowl to collect positive energy or "qi" and to protect it from negative energy or "sha qi." The closed mouth is said to prevent the positive energy from escaping and to keep the negative energy out.
